Shady Side Academy freshman Smrithi Shyam organized a donation drive to support Bethlehem Haven, a local women’s shelter.

Inspired to help women at the shelter who may be losing their jobs or struggling to pay rent and buy groceries, Shyam worked with a group of six student volunteers from the Pittsburgh area to collect donations and assemble 30 care kits with toiletries, masks, snacks and activities to increase the residents’ morale.

Shyam also applied for a grant through CaringCrowd.org with 100% gift matching.

Her team submitted $1,350 collected through local donations, which was matched, growing the total donation to $2,700.
